I am 83 years old, born in 1912 when Lu Rongting served as the governor of Guangxi. Lu Rongting ruled Guangxi for 10 consecutive years, and I lived under Lu’s rule in my childhood. Looking back on those 10 years, the local public security was relatively good, and the people lived and worked in peace and contentment; but gambling and opium smoking were very popular, and economic and cultural construction was very backward. In response to the call of Chairman Zhou Enlai of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the Guangxi Political Consultative Conference has established a cultural and historical data research committee from July 1959 to the present. Organizationally, I have been appointed as the deputy director, director, deputy chairman, and chairman of the committee’s office. The committee has collected more than 3 million words of historical materials of Lu Rongting’s period. Due to work needs, I went to Beijing to visit Mr. Li Shucheng, member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Mr. He Sui, Mr. Geng Yi, Mr. Chen Zhiji, and Mr. Cheng Qian, the vice chairman of the National People’s Congress, who had been in contact with Lu Rongting. They commented on Lu Rongting as kind-hearted and loyal, but short-sighted politically. I interviewed Lin Hu who was the commander of the army under the Ministry of the Army, Chen Liangzuo and Feng Puchen who were the staff officers, He Jianzhang who was the military law, Pan Naide who came to lobby Lu Rongting for Sun Yat-sen, and Yin Chenggang, Chen Xiong, Huang Luo, the junior officers of Lu Rongting’s army. Nian, Mo Shujie, Zhang Guangwei, etc., they commented on Lu Rongting as kind-hearted, loyal, and strict in military discipline; but his political vision was short-sighted, and he did not pay attention to economic, cultural and educational construction. In 1960, I went to Wumingli to build a farm to work. On Sundays, I went to Wuming County and Ningwuzhuang to visit the elderly Liang Shanchu and others; in 1962, I went to Longzhou for a meeting to interview the elderly in Longzhou and the elderly in Shuikou Nursing Home Zhao Qicai, Su Xianchun, Huang Cuiyu, Guan Tingjin, Lu Zhengqing, Ma Fengshi, Zhang Jinchun, Li Hechang, Wu Aai, etc., they tell the stories of Lu Rongting’s childhood, youth, and adulthood.
